Harlan Kredit, Linden Christian High School Harlan is in the National Teachers Hall of Fame and was National Science Teacher of the Year n 2005. Read about one of his student run science projects here: A student science project that makes a difference... |

Harlan has been a teacher for 45 years – 32 as a science teacher and athletic director at Linden Christian HS. In addition, Harlan has worked during the summer as a park ranger in Yellowstone National Park for the past 34 years. Harlan Kredit develops an excitement for learning, a sense of stewardship for our natural environment within Lynden High School's students. He is a master teacher who began teaching more than 40 years ago in the State of Michigan. Thirty years ago, he returned home to Lynden to teach science. Soon after his arrival he set out to involve his students in restoring the salmon run on the creek that was on the Lynden Christian High School property. During the past three decades, Harlan and his students have built, developed, and sustained a Salmon Hatchery project to rebuild salmon runs. Today, the Lynden hatchery, operated by students, raises more than 100,000 salmon each year. Each year the students plant 1000 trees and shrubs along a 10 mile streamside riparian zone. They have planted 20,000 to date. Their service and stewardship responsibilities also include picking up litter while learning to become community servants and activists. Harlan believes that If you give kids a reason to do something, and they understand the reason, they will own it. Harlan is a graduate of Calvin College and The College of William & Mary. He believes we must not waste a moment to give back. His principal, Keith Lambert writes, "Kredits students live and breathe science on a daily basis." |
